A battery moves daytime solar into the evening
Your home generally uses solar electricity as it is generated. When the panels produce more than you need, the surplus may be exported to the grid.
A compatible battery can store some of that excess and supply it later, often after the sun goes down. This can increase self-consumption and reduce the amount of electricity you buy from the grid at certain times.
The result depends on having enough surplus solar to charge the battery and enough later demand to use the stored energy.
Backup power needs the right design
A standard grid-connected solar system normally switches off during a blackout. A battery can provide backup only when the equipment and system are designed for that purpose.
Some systems power selected essential circuits, such as lights, refrigeration and communications. Others may support a broader set of loads, subject to battery output and capacity. High-demand appliances can quickly exceed the backup limit.

A battery does not remove every electricity cost
Battery storage can reduce grid imports, but it does not necessarily remove the bill. Daily supply charges remain, and the household may still import electricity when the battery is empty or demand exceeds its output.
Tariffs also matter. The value of storing solar can change depending on import prices, feed-in tariffs, time-of-use rates and any battery program. A savings estimate should show these assumptions rather than promise a fixed result.
Compatibility and warranties need checking
A battery must work with the existing or proposed solar system, inverter, switchboard and backup design. The installation location must also meet current electrical and safety requirements.
Battery warranties may include time, usable capacity, energy throughput and operating conditions. Ask what the warranty covers, who handles a claim and whether labour or other costs are included.
A battery suits some homes better than others
A household may have a stronger case when it exports substantial solar during the day, uses significant electricity after sunset or places a clear value on backup power. The case may be weaker when little excess solar is available, evening use is low or the expected savings do not justify the cost.
